Casting Shots

Here are some casting shots of people we considered to be in our music video.

This is Jeren Akin and she is 17 years old. We considered her because she is very camera friendly and easy to get along with. She likes to have a laugh and we are considering her to feature in our video but not as the main protagonist.

This is Kathryn James. She is 18 years old. We considered Kathryn because she is natural in front of the camera. However, we decided not to use Kathryn as she doesn't really fit into the sub-genre we are making a music video for and this would of led to an uncomfortable performance.

This is Fallon Hilton, we have chosen her as our main female protagonist as she fits our brand image very well.
She has a unique sense of style and is very good infront of the camera which is what we need for our music video.

Her mise en scene is very close to our brands image mise en scene, with her Red Hair, Red Lipstick and leather jacket.

The track we are using

This is the music track that we will be using for our music video. It is by a band called Twisted Wheel and the title of the tack is called 'Bad Candy'. The song is about a young person behind reckless and being addicted to cocaine (bad candy). It talks about how they feel on the drug and the life they lead because of the drug. We have chosen this song as it is perfect for 'rock and roll' brand image of a band that we want to create and feel that the lyrics are very good to use for a music video.

The lyrics:

Live your life hooked on a line
bad candy keeps you feeling fine
people asking all the time
go get your own cause I got mine
you can't explain just how you feel
upside down you lost the wheel
raise your neck and bellow it out

bad candy has got you now
bad candy has got you now

Monday morning on the floor
keep calling out for more and more
stand up get up are you sure?
best friend kicks you out the door
you can't explain just how you feel
upside down you lost the wheel
raise your neck and bellow it out

bad candy has got you now
bad candy has got you now
bad candy has got you now
bad candy has got you now

live your life hooked on a line
bad candy keeps you feeling fine
people asking all the time
go get your own cause I got mine
you can't explain just how you feel
upside down you lost the wheel
raise your neck and bellow it out

bad candy has got you now
bad candy has got you now

come round for tea at my house
come round for tea at my house

raise your neck and bellow it out
bad candy has got you now
bad candy has got you now.

We have got permission of this band to use this track, here is our evidence:

Equipment and Technology

The majority of this video will be shot outside so will mainly consist of using a camera and a tri-pod. However, if we choose to use the green screen, we will need the screen itself, the camera, lighting for the screen and lighting for the subject. The editing technology we will need is an imac with final cut installed onto it. In addition to this, we will need a fire wire cable to transfer the data and also, we will need our blog in order to update and show what we are doing. For the opening scene, we will need a vinyl player with a record.
Everything else we will be using will be listed in the props list on one of the other posts on the blog. The other post also includes venue's and cast's.

Synopsis: Narrative of Our Music Video

Our story begins by introducing the two protagonists played by Thom McGuire and Fallon Hilton. The basic story line is that they are both hooked on cocaine, go separately on a night out but bump into each other in a pub and wake up together in the morning. The video will be mainly split screen showing each on either side. During the night, our protagonists will meet each other, the split screens will go into one and then they will go into each others lives. Fallon will enter the cocaine live and Thom will enter Fallon's life and just been on a night out to have fun. However, both screens will join together to become one when we show the morning after and they are lying in bed together.

As we are doing a narrative video, we have to think about and consider the narrative theories of Propp, Todorov, Barthes and Levi Strauss.

Propp

According to Propp, every narrative should consist of some or all of the eight main characters - The Hero, The Villain, The Helper, The Dispatcher, The Donor, The Princess, The Father and The False Hero.

Our narrative consists of -

  • The Hero - this is both of our protagonists. They are both hero's as they have to achieve a good night out and enjoy life as a young adult.
  • The Villain - this could be the protagonists friends trying to look after their friend and stopping their fun.
  • The Helper - this is the friends of the protagonists as they are also on a night out and out to have fun, whilst helping the hero's enjoy their night out too.
  • The Donor - this will be the cocaine. This is because it'll help the hero's on their way to a good night out.
  • The Princess - the focus for the hero's will be to have a good night and have plenty cocaine.
Todorov

Todorov's theory can be simplified down to equilibrium, disruption, re-equilibrium. Our narrative includes this theory.

  • Equilibrium - Our narrative equilibrium is the protagonists getting ready for a night out and having a normal night out with friends.
  • Disruption - They are out on a night out, taking cocaine and ending up in bed together.
  • Re-Equilibrium - They wake up next to each other but they just carry on with their everyday lives.
Barthes

Barthes theory consists of questions being asked at the beginning of the narrative and then being answered at the end of the narrative if it is a linear narrative, other wise the 'enigma codes' are left open.

The enigma codes in our narrative music video are:
What is happening on the nights out?
Who is who?
Will they make it home ok?
Do they know each other?
How did they end up in bed together?
These questions are put across to the audience to conform multi-viewing of the music video as the audience would like to answer the questions and to see if they missed anything the first time around when they watched it.

Levi-Strauss

With Levi-Strauss theory it suggests that all meaning was gathered by binary oppositions. These are evident in any narrative media product and they are evident in our media video.
Good VS Bad
Weak VS Strong
Taking drugs VS just out to have a good time.

Chroma Key Training

For this task, we had to capture a video of Richard sitting in front of the green screen. we then had to edit this video in final cut using chroma key. Firstly, we had to import the video directly off the camera via fire-wire. we then had to add filters and other effects. Next, we had to remove the green screen by using the eye dropper tool which required zooming and very precise cutting. Finally, we had to add the background and make sure that their was no protruding background that we didn't want in the frame.

Final Cut Training

This is an example of us using final cut. We gained key knowledge in this software and found it easy to use. We will be using this software to edit our music video. In this turotial we learned how to insert text, cut the videos down, insert music over the texts and we used tools such as the razer blade tool and the pen tool to create the best video we would with our basic knowledge which we will be extending over the coming weeks.
